Unstable Sediment Potential Map

What is Unstable Sediment?
Unstable sediment refers to a quantity of residual or river-channel accumulated sediment on slopes or in river channels within a watershed that is in a state of transient equilibrium or unstable disequilibrium; when triggered by certain conditions such as rainfall or earthquakes, its sediment transport behavior will cause downstream sediment disasters.

Potential Calculation Method for Unstable Sediment Outflow Points
Category English Name Formula
殘坡土砂(USS) Unstable Sediment on Slope PUSS = Sediment Volume × Activity × Hazard
河道土砂(USR) Unstable Sediment on River PUSR = Sediment Volume × SPI Classification × Hazard
新生崩塌(LSS) Landslide Sediment on Slope PLSS = Sediment Volume × Annual Reduction Factor × Hazard
Total Potential Value Ptotal (Pt) = PUSS + PUSR + PLSS
Unstable Sediment Potential Map
To assess the potential impact of unstable sediment on railway and highway bridges across Taiwan, the Agency of Rural Development & Soil and Water Conservation (ARDSWC) surveyed and delineated the "Unstable Sediment Outflow Potential Map" (referred to as the Unstable Sediment Potential Map), using all provincial highways and Taiwan Railway bridges as analysis targets, and setting a minimum delineation standard of 100 hectares of watershed area for unstable sediment outflow points. The analysis delineated a total of 325 unstable sediment outflow points, and adopted "Residual Slope Sediment," "River Channel Sediment," and "New Landslide" as evaluation indicators to calculate the amount of unstable sediment within the watershed and analyze the hazard of each sediment volume, thus obtaining the potential value and potential classification for each unstable sediment outflow point.
Unstable Sediment Potential Level Classification
Potential Level Ln(Pt/Area) Condition Description
Low Potential Value Ln(Pt/Area) < 1.0 Lower potential, minor hazard
Medium Potential Value 1.0 ≤ Ln(Pt/Area) < 2.4 Medium potential, requires attention
Medium-High Potential Value 2.4 ≤ Ln(Pt/Area) < 3.6 Higher potential, monitoring recommended
High Potential Value 3.6 ≤ Ln(Pt/Area) < 5.5 High potential, requires strict monitoring and prevention
Extremely High Potential Value Ln(Pt/Area) ≥ 5.5 Extremely high potential, may cause significant hazard
